パリを拠点に活動するエルザ・パラ＆ジョアナ・ベナイヌ（フランス）は、2014年にニューヨークのスクール・オブ・ヴィジュアル・アーツで出会って以来、不可分の制作パートナーとなり、デュオとしての活動を続けています。約10年の間、写真の領域に留まらず、絵画、映画、パフォーマンスにインスピレーションを得たセルフポートレイト作品を制作し、物語のような無限の可能性に溢れたイメージを創り出してきました。写真に登場するすべての人物を自ら演じ、常に変化する登場人物の姿を通して、そのアイデンティティや表現方法、人間関係の複雑さを、見る人に熱考させるような作品を創作しています。日本での初展示となるT3 PHOTOFESTIVAL TOKYO 2023では、2018年から2019年にかけてカナダのカルガリーで制作されたシリーズ＜Beyond the Shadows）からの作品が披露されます。エドワード・ホッパーが描く現代アメリカの象徴的なシーンと、デヴィッド・リンチの映画に漂う不穏な雰囲気の中間にあるような＜Beyond the Shadows）では、現代社会の匿名性の渦の中で、衝突することなく漂いながら絶えず交差し合っているような一連の人物にスポットを当てています。

Elsa PARRA and Johanna BENAÏNOUS, who live and work in Paris, met at the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2014 and have since become inseparable. Over the past decade, the duo has developed a practice of self-portraiture that draws on influences from the realm of photography as well as painting, cinema, and performance to create images that overflow with narrative possibilities. As they play all of the characters that feature in their photographs, their constantly shifting personas invite us to reflect on questions of identity, representation, and the complexity of human relationships. For their exhibition at T3 Photo Festival Tokyo, their first in Japan, Elsa & Johanna are showing work from their series Beyond the Shadows made in 2018-2019 in Calgary, Canada. Somewhere between Edward Hopper's emblematic scenes of modern Americana and David Lynch's unsettling atmospheres, Beyond the Shadows brings to life a series of characters cast adrift in the anonymity of modern life, whose trajectories seem to constantly intersect without ever colliding.
