The temporary walls enclosing construction sites are the city's time of "not yet." Behind them, Tokyo is in the process of being reshaped into its next form. The walls were originally blank surfaces meant to show nothing, but now they are lined with 55 portraits of unfamiliar faces. Every one is a portrait of someone who is not yet in the world. Müller-Pohle's Robots. A Speculative Compendium is a collection of 55 fictional robot types created in collaboration with generative AI. However, he did not simply ask AI to freely imagine "robots of the future." Instead, he provided information about the work each robot would perform and the environment in which it would exist. Just as a giraffe's neck has become long enough to reach high branches and an elephant's trunk has become long enough to connect to the ground with its mouth, the robotic bodies presented here have been optimized for their given tasks and environments, in the same way as the forms of living creatures are products of adaptation to their surroundings. The book is not a collection of imaginary pictures, but an ecological study of species that do not yet exist—a speculative natural history encompassing an evolutionary theory of robots. Thus, it inevitably took the form of an illustrated encyclopedia. Images generated by AI are a recalculation of vast amounts of past data. If the logic of evolution is applied to this recalculation then what emerges are forms with a firm foundation in everything humanity has seen, recorded, and accumulated—forms that reveal a "possible future." Can photography capture the future? Müller-Pohle's work offers an answer to this old question: Yes, it can now. But this future arrives in the form of datagraphs produced by recalculating the past. Now, on the temporary walls of a changing city, we see the bodies of possible futures. Beyond the walls, the city is assembling its next form. On this side, the robots wait quietly. Both are forms that have yet to arrive. You are essentially moving between those two "not yets" as you walk along. Stop for a moment and look back at them—the robots, calculated from everything in the past, are our future neighbors.
「TOKYO CITY CANVAS」
