写真の原点となったニエプスの発明からほぼ200年を経過したいま、写真を巡る新たなメディア状況の変革は進行中です。20世紀の都市は往々にしてその複雑さゆえに「迷宮」として形容されました。現在、私たちは、都市についてのあらゆる情報を手元のデバイスで知りうるようになり、都市の迷宮のベールは剥ぎ取られ、新たなリアリティを呈し始めています。21世紀の写真家たちは、こうした変容に敏感に反応し、新たな独自の方法で「都市」にアプローチし始めているのではないでしょうか。
本展は、写真と都市のダイナミックで豊かな錬金（アルケミー）の軌跡を、東川賞コレクションに所蔵されている、ジョエル・スタンフェルド、ルイス・ボルツ、オリーボ・バルビエリ、金村修、池田葉子、鷹野隆大、原美樹子、七人の受賞作家（受賞年順）の作品を通してご覧いただきます。
The photograph has, from its beginning, revealed aspects of the city that elude the naked eye. In every age, it has brought to light aspects of human and social conditions and the sensibility and spirt unique to that time. Distinguished photographers engage with cities and, like alchemists, manipulate the chemical reactions of encounters between photography and urban environments to create images. The images generated in this way, like facing mirrors, reflect and illuminate our awareness of the city.
Nearly two hundred years have passed since Niépce’s invention marking the birth of photography. Transformations in the new media environment surrounding photography are still unfolding and the twentieth-century city, in its complexity, was often described as a labyrinth. Now that we can access every kind of information about a city on our devices, the veil of the urban labyrinth has been lifted, revealing a new reality. Photographers of the twenty-first century, attuned to these transformations, are beginning to approach the 'city' in new and distinctive ways.
This exhibition presents the dynamic and richly layered lineage and trajectory of photographic alchemy and the interplay of perspectives on the city, as seen in the works housed in the Higashikawa Award Collection of seven award-winning artists (in order of award year): Joel Sternfeld, Lewis Baltz, Olivo Barbieri, Kanemura Osamu, Ikeda Yoko, Takano Ryudai, and Hara Mikiko.

インディペンデント・キュレーター／クリティック。川崎市市民ミュージアム （以下 kcm)）在籍中、学芸員として写真、デザイン、現代美術に関する展覧会を企画。2017年からインディペンデントで展覧会企画、執筆ならびに講義を行う。代表的展覧会:「ルイス・ボルツ▶︎法則」（1992 kcm）、「バウハウス 芸術教育の革命と実験」（1994 kcm）、「現代写真の動向」（1995, 2001 kcm）、「遠・近 ベッヒャーの地平」（1996 kcm）、「バウハウスの写真」（1997 kcm）、「写真ゲーム」（2008 kcm）、「生きるアート 折元立身」（2016 kcm）、「きたれ、バウハウス」（2019 共同監修）など。著書『光のプロジェクト —写真、モダニズムを超えて—』（青弓社 2007）、『生きるアート 折元立身』(美術出版社 2024)、訳書『写真の哲学のために』（ヴィレム・フルッサー著 勁草書房 1999）、共編著『Akira Yoshimura Works: 吉村朗写真集』(大隅書店 2014）、共著『現代写真アート原論 《コンテンポラリーアートとしての写真》の進化形へ』（フィルムアート社 2019）など。大学、大学院、専門学校等で写真、メディア、デザイン、アートに関する講義を行う。美術評論家連盟会員。批評誌『写真批評』（TCP PRESS）現編集長。

While on the staff of the Kawasaki City Museum (KCM), Fukagawa organized exhibitions on photography, design, and contemporary art as a curator. Since 2017, he has worked independently, curating exhibitions, writing, and lecturing.

この度、T3 PHOTO FESTIVAL TOKYO 2025にて、写真の町東川賞コレクションを展示いたします。写真の町東川賞は第41回までで180名の作家に授与されており、受賞者には対象作品のなかから、東川町民にオリジナルプリントをご寄贈いただいております。本展を通し、東川町が41年間歩んできた写真の町の取り組みについて改めて知っていただく機会となれば幸いです。
最後になりますが、本展開催にあたり、ご支援ご協力賜りました歴代受賞作家の皆様、キュレーターの深川雅文様、関係者の皆様に対し心からの感謝を申し上げます。

This year, at T3 Photo Festival Tokyo 2025, we are presenting a selection from the Higashikawa Award Collection. Thus far, the Higashikawa Award has been presented 41 times, honoring 180 artists. Award recipients generously donate original prints of their award-winning works to the people of Higashikawa. It is our privilege to present this exhibition, with the hope that it will offer visitors an opportunity to rediscover the initiatives that have shaped Higashikawa's journey as "The Town of Photography" over the past 41 years.
In conclusion, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all past award recipients, to curator Masafumi Fukagawa, and to everyone else whose generous support and cooperation have made this exhibition possible.
