system of Cultureは、絵画や映画、ドラマといった様々な視覚芸術・文化を参照しながら、緻密な演出によって写真を構成する作家です。展示作品はどれも写真でありながら、私たちが「写真」に期待するいくつかの要素が丁寧に消しさられています。例えばスナップにおける決定的暇間や偶然を取り込むといった要素、あるいは現実を切りとったものだと感じさせるような奥行がここにはありません。
むしろ強調された平面性や1枚の絵の中に現れる時間の流れは近代絵画史への言及であり、配置と反復によって現れるその場限りの風景は写真とインスタレーションの関係を想起させます。またそのカラフルなパレットは日常に溢れるモノから構成されており、私たちの生活に馴染みの深い資本主義的な文化についても作品から引き出すことが出来そうです。写真、絵画、模様、広告・・・様々な視覚表現の間を行き来するこれらの作品から、あなたは何を読みとりますか？
System of Culture references various visual arts and culture, such as paintings, films, and TV dramas, while composing photographs through elaborate productions. While all works on display are photographs, several of the elements that we expect in a
"photograph" have been carefully erased. For example, elements such as the critical moment or coincidence captured in a snapshot or the depth that makes you feel like it is a slice of reality are not present here. Rather, emphasized flatness and the passage of time visible in a single painting are references to modern painting history, and the temporary landscape that appears through arrangement and repetition calls to mind the relationship of photographs and installations. Furthermore, this colorful palette is made from things that flood everyday life, and it is possible to extract even the very familiar capitalistic culture in our lives from the works. Photographs, paintings, patterns, and advertisements...what can you read from these works that move back and forth between these visual expressions?
