Shoji Ueda’s Inner Child

Ueda Shoji received his first camera as an adolescent, when photography itself was still in its infancy. From there, he built a career spanning over sixty years, achieving both domestic and international renown. Despite this acclaim, Ueda insisted on calling himself an amateur — a stance that may have allowed him to continue to approach photography with such openness, testing new aesthetics and techniques throughout his life. Ueda is best known for the staged photographs he made in the Tottori sand dunes situated near his hometown of Sakaiminato, to which he remained devoted even as Tokyo drew away many of his contemporaries. Iconic as they are, these dune images capture only one facet of his remarkably varied photographic practice. This exhibition turns to a quieter, equally central preoccupation, that of childhood. Anchored by original prints from the series Warabe Goyomi(Children the Year Round, 1971), the works gathered here move beyond portraiture of children to reveal something more personal — the acute observation and experimentation that Ueda shared with the very children he photographed. Shoji Ueda’s Inner Child traces this throughline, presenting a photographer whose enduring achievement was to never outgrow a profound curiosity about the world, and the myriad ways of seeing it.

Hidden Within the Chrysalises

Mure Akemi questions the ubiquitous images of adolescence that circulate across various media. She navigates the uncertain memories and frustrations that risk being altered and assigned a different meaning once put into words. Rather than attempting to articulate these sensations through words, she has sought to capture their subtle ripples through observation via the medium of photography. Mure continues to photograph local high school students in the town of Sakaiminato. At the root of her practice lies the presence of Ueda Shoji, who was both her teacher and a familiar neighbor who lived nearby. Today, however, the dynamic between the photographer and the photographed carries a different meaning and weight than it did in Ueda’s era. In the exhibition Hidden Within the Chrysalises, the gazes of teenage girls protected by the “chrysalis” of their school uniforms intersect with that of the artist and her past girlhood. Through this reciprocating gaze, the exhibition quietly portrays these high school students, uncovering a reality distinct from the stereotypes associated with the word “adolescence”.
