雲の向こうから淡い輪郭を覗かせる太陽の光
少しずつ溶けながら火を灯す蝋燭
黒い斑点がちらばる白馬のなめらかな毛並み
店頭に積まれた、孵化途中の胚が入った白い卵の山
コップに注がれた搾りたての牛乳
飛行機から見下ろした白い雲
昨日の雪に一面を覆われ、光をはね返す真っ白な大地
小さな花が放射状に集まった白い花
白いテーブルの上で、ほとんど点のようになって死んでいる蝿
旅先や日常の中で偶然出会い、無意識に撮ってきた白いものの写真たち。 これから生まれるもの、すでに死んでいるもの、燃えながら失われていくもの、形を変えながら漂うもの。 何も書かれていない白と、すべてを消したあとの白を、私たちは見分けることができないように、遠く離れているはずの始まりと終わりも、白の中では同じ色をしている。 私たちの身体もいつか形を変え、最後は白い骨になるように、すべてのものが平等にいつか終わるということを、 白だけはずっと前から知っているような気がする。だからこそ、光に照らされた白いものを見るとき、ほかのどの色とも違う感動や安堵があり、ときに神聖さすら感じるほど、特別に美しく見えるのかもしれない。

A white expanse of earth blanketed with yesterday's snow, reflecting the light
A white flower made up of tiny blossoms gathered in a radial pattern
A fly lying dead on a white table, reduced almost to a dot
Photographs of white objects I have come across by chance in my travels or in everyday life and photographed without any particular thought. Things yet to be born, things already dead, things lost as they burn, things that change form as they drift.
Just as we cannot distinguish the white on which nothing has been written and the white after everything is erased, so the beginning and the end that should be far apart are also the same white. Just as our own bodies will someday change form and eventually become white bones, all things are destined to come to an end— something only the color white seems to have known from time past. That might be why, when I see white objects illuminated, I am moved and filled with peace that no other color can impart, and they may appear so wonderfully beautiful that at times I even feel them to be divine.
